My boss has asked me to investigate "cool" technologies that might be useful within the work environment. It's not a free-for-all, but I still have quite a bit of opportunity.

For example, we have been using MSN Messenger to text-message team members within the building. This has been really useful. Typically, we use the text messaging for passing quick bursts of information, such as server names, location of data, or the names of personnel involved with a project. It's a very non-intrusive way to communicate.

However, we are not using any of the "rich media" aspects of the messenger, such as voice or video. I think we're going to give it a shot! It's cool technology; maybe it will even be useful. I'm suggesting a two month pilot with a control group.

Other ideas I'm toying with include internal blogging, podcasts, and rss feeds. We'll see what happens!
